Chris Allen has a typically long, thoughtful
essay on the history of social software, going back to Vannevar Bush and Memex.
I think one of the more interesting transformations was that of collaboration to introduction, with services like LinkedIn or Spoke trying to add practical applications to Milgram’s work on connectedness, and I’m surprised that Chris doesn’t touch on it.
